Hello everyone…

Do you like Harry Potter? Do you like beasts? Do you like fantastic beasts? Do you like Pokèmon Go? If you’re scratching your head as to what movie I’m talking about (and somehow didn’t read the title) we’re talking about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them the latest movie from Warner Brothers based off the Harry Potter spin-off by acclaimed author J.K. Rowling. Fantastic Beasts is a fascinating tale about Newt  Scamander, a young man who finds, captures, and documents all sorts of incredible and imaginative creatures and stores them in his briefcase–which doubles as an incredible ‘zoo’ for these beasts. Now you see the Pokèmon Go reference don’t you? His travels take him to New York City where a boat-load of adventure awaits him filled with amazing creatures, a bumbling Muggle (known as a No-Maj in America), uncontrollable dark forces, and beloved characters.

To put it plainly, Fantastic Beasts is delightful! Rowling’s tale blends the real world with the fantastical magical world of wizards, monsters, and wonder in such a unique and heartwarming way that at the end of it all you’ll find you heart in both worlds, perfectly content to enjoy the nuances and adventures within. Eddie Redmayne (Newt) and his newfound No-Maj friend played by Dan Folger make for a wonderful duo that rely on the intangibles of loyalty, trust, and helpfulness to bring their worlds together into a meaningful and memorable friendship. The film also boasts solid female casting with Katherine Waterston playing a marvelously confidant leading lady. The film although seemingly childish will gladly pull on all of your heart strings if you let it–which is fairly easy for it do given the endearing nature of the themes, characters, and of course the many unique creatures to be found. Visually the movie is pleasing–there were some spotty sections where the CGI didn’t play well but considering there’s a whole world of imagination that is brought to life it’s hard to fault the studio too much for the incredible effort. The story flows smoothly– it seemed although there was more than one ending though which got a bit tiresome (too many loose ends to tie up)–but the plot was easy to follow despite all the winding turns it takes the audience through. All in all I was touched by the movie’s attention to detail, its self-assurance in direction and development, and the way it coaxed the audience through all the adventure to a very satisfying and heart-warming end.

Fantasitc Beasts and Where to Find Them is more than appropriate for all ages and is a fun filled, wondrous adventure that will make you believe in magic once again!
