Cinema has a rich history behind it. In fact, estimates declare that there are approximately 500,000 movies in existence. From drama to sci-fi, from action to comedy, film has defined generations, carved new paths in intellect and technological advancement, and has portrayed the inner workings of man, the world, and the universe in the hours upon hours of entertainment. That being said out 500,000 movies in existence it was extremely difficult to rank the Top 50 Movies of All Time. However with a lot of thought, patience, and consideration The Daily Diatribe finally has come to the conclusion of what fifty films deserve the title of “The Greatest.”
Quite a few achievements are contained in this ranking. Stanley Kubrik is the most accomplished director on this list, having directed five of the movies present and Leonardo DiCaprio is most featured on list having performed in four of the movies that made the cut. Only two animated films, Toy Story and Spirited Away were able to be considered among the top films of all time and they are well deserving. Comic book films as popular as they are did not have a strong presence on this list. In fact the only one counted worthy was The Dark Knight coming in at number thirty-four. Although most of the movies on the list were made in the 20th century there were a couple of 21st century films featured including La La Land which was just released last year.
In order to simplify things and to be sure that multiple movies of the same franchise didn’t hog up the precious slots on the list any franchise has the best movie in the franchise listed as a representative for the saga or trilogy as a whole. There were five franchises that made it onto this list: The Godfather trilogy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Star Wars saga, The Rocky saga, and the Dark Knight trilogy.
In order to determine the Top 50 Movies of All Time a standard was created which included the six primary conventions of film making: Directing, Screenwriting, Acting, Cinematography, Special Effects, and Artistic Value. It was upon this standard that the list was created. This means that many will disagree with me on this list because people have various views on what their interpretation of those six values are–which is perfectly fine. But without further ado here are the Top 50 Movies of All Time:
